Microbiology

The microbiology service provides a comprehensive clinical and laboratory service. This service covers the diagnosis, treatment, management and prevention of infectious diseases. 

Our team includes consultant microbiologists, biomedical scientists and clinical scientists laboratory support staff.

We undertake investigations within the following sections: 

•  Bacteriology

•  Virology

• Serology

• Mycology

• Parasitology

• Molecular microbiology 

Accreditation

East Kent Hospitals Microbiology discipline is United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) accredited. The service meets standard ISO 15189 (UKAS no.9399).

This service has Institute of Biomedical Science training approval for:

• Certificate of Competence Registration Portfolio leading to Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration

• Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology

• Certificate of Achievement for support staff vocational training.

The service has National School of Healthcare Science approval for:

• Trainee clinical scientists (Scientist Training programme -STP)

• Trainee consultant clinical scientists (Higher Specialist Scientist Training Programme - HSST). 

All pathology tests are carried out within the governance of the Pathology quality management system. Please note that only those tests listed on the scope are accredited to standard ISO 15189.
