Wing-walker Wendy hopes to beat her fear of heights

A PA is facing her fear of heights head on – with a sponsored wing walk for East Kent Hospitals Charity.

Wendy Carn, who works with the Kent and Medway communication and assistive technology service at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital, will take to the skies on Saturday, 15 July at Headcorn air field.

Travelling at speeds of up to 120 miles per hour, she will be strapped to the top of a Boeing Stearman bi-plane for her charity challenge.

Wendy, 56, from Deal, said: “I am not great with heights, I’m not a dare-devil, or an adrenaline junkie, but when I saw the opportunity to do a wing walk for a great cause I decided to push myself out of my comfort zone.

“It’s not something I’m ever likely to have the chance to do again and if we’ve learnt anything from the pandemic it’s that life is for living and we should seize the chance to do new things.

“I wanted to challenge myself and I think the wing walk will definitely do that!”

Wendy joined the team, who work with people to help them use technology to communicate, in 2020 after being furloughed then made redundant from her previous role working in HR.

She said: “It is an incredible team and I hope some of them will be there on the day, together with colleagues and friends from my previous job.

“I’m looking forward to it, despite my fear of heights, because I think it will be the closest I’ll ever get to flying.

“It is a real once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and being able to raise money for projects that will benefit staff, patients and visitors at the same time is fantastic.”
